What if The Hobbit in 48 fps is the first movie you see?

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. The first theatrical movie release ever with a framerate of 48 frames per second (only with 3D screenings, though). There have been a lot of diametrically opposite opinions about whether this 48 fps thing is any good. Certainly tons of negative reactions.

And, honestly, I was weirded out at first too. It took about 15 minutes before I got used to the high framerate. But, ultimately I got into the movie and enjoyed it immensely. Although it certainly was a different movie-watching experience, I kinda liked it. It felt a bit like theatre, with awesome sets on stage and multiple viewing angles. And, interestingly enough, I hadn’t had any problems with 3D making my head explode (which is my usual reaction to watching movies in 3D). That’s definitely a plus. But, would I watch the movie in high framerate again? And my answer to that is… Maybe. I don’t know. Certainly not before I see it in traditional 24 fps. But.

I got my laptop back!

Good news, everyone! (And yes, you can imagine me speaking in Professor Farnsworth’s voice) My laptop is back from repairs! Finally. It’s been two weeks at least. It was hell. Special thanks to Brian Canart, who helped me not to lose touch with the outer world by lending me his own laptop. Brian, you’re awesome!

All in all, this means that, as soon as I set everything up (reinstall all the software and all that good stuff), I’ll continue the work on my side projects. So, keep an eye on the updates!

Dead Hard Drive on laptop = censored word!

So, at the end of last week, the hard drive on my laptop kinda died. The loss of information was insubstantial, thanks for me liking to back up stuff. However, I had to send the laptop to the manufacturer to replace the Hard Drive, and that will take one to two weeks (damn it for not being a desktop PC where I’d do everything on my own in less than a day!)

I’m using my friend’s borrowed laptop to not lose contact with the outside world and continue the job hunt. What that means, however, is that I will not work on any of my projects until I get my own laptop back. So, just so you know. No updates does not equal laziness, but technical difficulties and sense of respect towards another person.

Combat System – First Prototype

A quick note about the Unity prototype I said I’ve been working on – I ditched it. Didn’t like the results and where it was going. It was very movement-centric, while I want something much more combat-centric, our character having a sword and all. So, today, using Love2D (a cool free 2D engine), I quickly wrote the first prototype of the combat system for ‘The Game’ (no name yet).

Setting Out to Create a New Game

Since I graduated from VFS, my usual day schedule mostly consisted of: a) searching for open job positions and sending out resumes; b) playing games; c) experimenting with different tools (but nothing concrete). And while the schedule still will have those three things in it for a while, today I woke up with a thought, ‘It is time to make a game!’ There was only one question: what game? It had to be in scope, I don’t want to start making the ‘Game of the Century’ right now… And then I remembered the back side of my business card, which has a very cool depiction of a warrior fighting a dragon.

On Quantity vs. Quality

I love RPGs. But, if there is one thing that most RPGs have in common, it’s that 95% of player equipment is totally… useless. There’s a selling point on the back of the boxes of many RPGs: ‘150 weapons! 70 armor sets! Lots of everything!’ And this is a strange thing, because people always agree that quality beats quantity, and yet we constantly see the opposite when it comes to items in RPGs. In this post, I’m going to elaborate on why this bothers me and what I consider to be more preferable.
